How to Prevent Basement Flooding During Heavy Rain in Edmonton

How to Prevent Basement Flooding During Heavy Rain in Edmonton

As Edmonton and Sherwood Park brace for another wave of rainy weather, now is the time to check one of the most overlooked systems in your home—your sump pump.

A functioning sump pump is essential to prevent water from seeping into your basement and causing costly damage. In my recent home maintenance walkthrough, I encountered a sump pump with a failed float. It wasn’t kicking on even though the water level was high—a perfect example of how quickly things can go wrong without regular checks.

Here’s what you should do:

  • Test your sump pump at least twice a year.

  • Make sure the float is working properly.

  • Check that the unit is connected to power.

  • If unsure, call a plumber or someone who can assess the situation safely.

These simple steps can protect your foundation and avoid major insurance claims. As a local Edmonton Realtor, I’ve seen too many homes suffer preventable damage. Stay proactive and keep your home in top condition.
